Kuala Lumpur to Cherating private transfer — RM650, around 4 hours

A private hire transfer from Kuala Lumpur to Cherating takes around four hours door to door, running east on the Lebuhraya Pantai Timur (LPT1 and LPT2) before joining the Kuantan–Kemaman road for the final stretch up to the beach. The price is fixed at RM650 for the whole vehicle, to any hotel in Cherating.

Cherating sits on the South China Sea coast in Pahang, on Malaysia’s east coast — a long, quiet stretch of beach known for its surf break and the turtle sanctuary just north of the village. This page is for travellers who have already decided to make the trip and want to know what the drive actually involves: the timing, the stops, the days to avoid. It is one of the longer east coast runs in our intercity transfer service from Kuala Lumpur.

Cherating is one of the few Malaysian beach destinations with no useful rail link and no airport of its own. The realistic choices are an express bus to Kuantan followed by a local taxi, driving the route yourself by car, or a direct transfer. The direct run is the only one that puts you at your hotel door without a change.

How long the drive from Kuala Lumpur to Cherating takes

Around four hours door to door, covering roughly 260 km.

The driving itself is closer to three and a half hours. The difference is getting clear of Kuala Lumpur at the start — city traffic is unpredictable and a slow exit can add half an hour before you have even reached the expressway — plus a stop for the toilet and a coffee, which most people want on a run this length.

The route runs east out of Kuala Lumpur onto LPT1, the first section of the East Coast Expressway, continues along LPT2 towards Kuantan, then leaves the expressway for the Kuantan–Kemaman road for the final stretch north to Cherating. It is expressway for most of the journey, which is why the timing holds up reasonably well. The variable parts are the start and the coastal section at the end.

Where we stop on the way

R&R Temerloh and R&R Gambang both sit directly on the route, and both have proper toilets and coffee. Temerloh comes earlier in the journey, Gambang later. We stop at whichever suits how the drive is going, or skip the break entirely if you would rather push straight through.

If you are travelling with children or someone who needs to stretch regularly, tell us when you book and we will plan the stop rather than leave it to chance.

Breaking the journey at Batu Caves or Kuala Gandah

Two places worth stopping at sit close enough to the route to add to the drive rather than divert from it.

Blue Toyota Innova private hire transfer parked at Batu Caves temple with the Murugan statue and rainbow staircase behind
The Batu Caves stopover on the way out of Kuala Lumpur — RM50 added to the transfer.

Batu Caves — additional RM50. On the way out of Kuala Lumpur, before the highway proper. The limestone cave temple at the top of a long painted staircase is the most recognisable landmark in the Klang Valley, and a stop there turns the first hour of the drive into something more than motorway.

Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary — an optional RM50 stopover on the drive to Cherating.

Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary — additional RM50. Near Lanchang in Pahang, just off the route and roughly halfway. A government-run centre caring for rescued and relocated elephants. Visits run to set session times, so tell us your travel date when you book and we will check what is possible on the day.

Both stops together: RM100 on top of the transfer price.

Either one adds time to a journey that is already four hours, so they work best when you are not trying to reach Cherating by a particular hour. Tell us when you book and we will set a departure time that fits the stop in properly rather than rushing it.

When the drive takes longer, and how to plan around it

Weekends are consistently heavier than weekdays on this route. Kuala Lumpur empties towards the east coast beaches on Friday evening and Saturday morning, and comes back on Sunday afternoon.

Public holidays are where it gets serious. The east coast highways carry heavy balik kampung traffic before and after every major holiday, and a four-hour drive can stretch well beyond that.

How Malaysian long weekends actually work

This is the part visitors usually miss. Malaysians commonly take an extra day of leave to bridge a public holiday to the weekend, so a single holiday turns into a four-day break and the traffic spreads across more days than the calendar suggests:

  • Holiday on a Thursday — many take the Friday off as well
  • Holiday on a Tuesday — many take the Monday off as well
  • Holiday on a Monday — many take the Tuesday off and travel home a day late, to miss the Sunday jam

That last one matters for anyone checking out of a Cherating hotel on a holiday Monday. Returning on the Tuesday is often faster than the Monday, because a good number of local drivers have already made the same calculation.

The two Hari Raya dates depend on the moon and are confirmed close to the time, so treat those rows as approximate until the official announcement. Not every holiday is observed in every state — Thaipusam is a holiday in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor but not in Pahang, which means the traffic is people leaving the city rather than the destination filling up.

Note how tightly the early part of the year is packed. Thaipusam, Federal Territory Day and Chinese New Year all fall within eighteen days, which makes late January to mid-February one long disrupted stretch on the east coast roads.

The two Hari Raya dates depend on the moon and are confirmed close to the time, so treat those rows as approximate until the official announcement. If your trip falls near any of these dates, message us with your travel day and we will tell you what to expect and suggest a departure time.

Transfers to Club Med Cherating

The last stretch into Cherating — the Club Med turn-off and the turtle sanctuary sign mark the final few minutes.

Club Med is the most common destination on this route. Most of the people we drive to Cherating are Club Med guests arriving as families, usually with children, child seats, and a full boot of luggage — which is why this transfer runs in an MPV rather than a sedan.

Send us your check-in date and time when you book and we will work back from it to set a departure time from Kuala Lumpur.

Other Cherating hotels and chalets

Selamat Datang ke Cherating welcome sign at the junction into Cherating village, Pahang

The same transfer runs to the beachfront properties along Cherating Beach — Royale Chulan Cherating, Holiday Villa Cherating Beach Resort, Residence Inn Cherating, Suria Beach Resort, Cherating Bayview Resort, The Kasturi Resort, and Tanjung Inn — and to the smaller chalets, homestays, and guesthouses in Kampung Cherating at the village end.

Cherating is spread out along the coast rather than concentrated in one strip, so the last few minutes of the drive vary depending on which end you are staying at. There is no extra charge for somewhere at the far end.

If you are staying at a smaller place that is hard to find on a map, send the location pin as well — some of the village chalets sit down unmarked side lanes off the main coastal road.

The vehicle and how many people it takes

A full load at a Kuala Lumpur hotel pickup — four check-in cases plus hand luggage, with the rear seats still clear.

Transfers run in a Toyota Innova MPV — a fully licensed vehicle for hire, air-conditioned, with a separate luggage area behind the rear seats.

Four adults of medium build is the working maximum on this route. The Innova seats more on a short city hop, but Cherating is a four-hour drive with a full boot behind you, and four is the number where everyone still has room to sit properly the whole way.

Luggage: four check-in suitcases plus two pieces of hand luggage.

Two common family setups:

  • 2 adults + 2 children — one baby seat and one booster seat
  • 3 adults + 1 child — one booster seat

Baby seats and booster seats are provided at no extra charge, subject to availability. Request them when you book rather than on the day, so we can confirm we have the right one for your child’s age.

If your group is larger than four, or you are carrying more than four check-in bags, message us before booking. We will tell you honestly whether it fits or whether you need a second vehicle.

What the transfer costs

RM650 from Kuala Lumpur to Cherating. Fixed, for the whole vehicle, not per person. The same price applies in the other direction.

Petrol and tolls are included, along with a baby seat or booster seat if you need one. Stopovers at Batu Caves or Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary are quoted separately at RM50 each, or RM100 for both — a rest stop for the toilet and a coffee is included and is a different thing from an attraction visit.

Payment is in cash on the day, in ringgit. Please have the amount ready, as the driver does not carry a card reader. Nothing is paid upfront and we do not take card details when you book.

Pick-ups outside Kuala Lumpur city — Selangor, Putrajaya, or elsewhere in the Klang Valley — may be priced differently. Send us the address and we will quote it before you commit to anything.

How to book, and how early

Use the booking form on this page. Pick your direction, check the price, fill in your details, and it opens WhatsApp with everything already written out — date, passengers, luggage, hotel, and child seats.

Booking direct means no platform commission, no upfront payment, and no card details. We reply with confirmation of availability and the final price.

Reconfirm with us 48 hours before your pick-up time. A short WhatsApp message is enough. Nothing is prepaid, so this is how we know your plans have not changed and the vehicle is genuinely needed. It is also when we settle the final pick-up time around your schedule.

Book as early as you can. June, July, and August are the busiest months on this route — the European summer holidays put real pressure on east coast beach transfers, and dates do fill.

If you need a baby seat or a booster seat, book earlier still. We hold a limited number and they go first during the summer. Requesting one weeks ahead is the only reliable way to secure it.

If your plans change

Nothing is paid upfront, so there is no cancellation fee and no refund to chase. If your plans change, tell us as early as you reasonably can and we will release the date.

The 48-hour reconfirmation exists for the same reason. Because there is no deposit holding the booking, a quick message two days before is how we know the vehicle is still needed — and how we avoid a driver arriving at a hotel for someone who has already changed their plans.

Common questions about the Kuala Lumpur to Cherating drive

Around 260 km by road, driving east across the peninsula into Pahang and out to the South China Sea coast. Allow four hours door to door.

Express buses run as far as Kemaman, the nearest town served, about 12.8 km from Cherating Beach and 11.5 km from Club Med. From there you need a taxi for the final stretch. The bus is cheaper, but it leaves you 12 km short with one more journey still to arrange.

Yes. Club Med is one of the properties we drop at, along with every other hotel and guesthouse in Cherating. Give us the property name when you book.

If you want to. R&R Temerloh and R&R Gambang are both on the route with toilets and coffee. Tell the driver, or tell us when you book if you would prefer it planned in advance.

Yes. A Batu Caves stopover adds RM50, and Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary adds RM50 — RM100 for both. Tell us when you book so we can set a departure time that allows for it, rather than rushing the visit to reach Cherating on schedule. Kuala Gandah runs to set session times, so we will check what is possible on your date.

Yes, at the same price. Select the direction on the booking form and tell us where in Cherating to collect you.

The price does not change. A holiday weekend can add an hour or more to this drive, and that is our problem rather than yours once the price is fixed.
